The Everest Three High Passes Trek is the Khumbu’s most complete and demanding teahouse circuit, linking the remote Bhote Koshi Valley, the Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp and the upper Imja Valley. This 17-day clockwise itinerary crosses Renjo La, Cho La and Kongma La—three high passes above 5,300 metres—and visits both Gokyo Ri and Kala Patthar. Altitudes, walking hours and driving times are approximate. The guide may adjust daily timing, rest stops, accommodation or route details for weather, trail conditions, transport delays, acclimatization and group safety without changing the essential character of the journey. Beginning with the classic approach from
Lukla to Namche Bazaar, the route turns west through Thame and Lungden before crossing Renjo La to Gokyo. It then traverses Cho La to the Everest Base Camp trail, reaches Gorak Shep and Kala Patthar, and crosses Kongma La into Chhukung before descending through Tengboche to Lukla. This is a strenuous high-altitude trek for experienced, very fit trekkers. Pass crossings involve long days, steep loose terrain, snow or ice, cold wind and sections where the trail may be difficult to identify. Conditions can force a pass to close or require a route change; the guide’s safety decision is final. The journey combines the Khumbu’s high-mountain scenery with Sherpa settlements, Buddhist heritage and the practical realities of trekking at altitude. Daily progress is deliberately measured around acclimatization, lodge availability, trail conditions and mountain weather. Flight schedules and helicopter services remain operationally dependent, while the guide’s pace and health decisions take priority over a fixed sightseeing promise.
The planned route unfolds in distinct stages: Arrival in Kathmandu; Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar; Cross Renjo La and Trek to Gokyo; Dzongla to Lobuche; Cross Kongma La and Trek to Chhukung; and finally Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. These are the main stages of the programme rather than a promise of fixed daily timings. The detailed itinerary gives the daily walking or transfer descriptions, accommodation arrangements, altitude notes and adjustments that may be needed in practice.
Box 1: Remote Valleys and Sherpa Mountain Culture The route connects Thame, Lungden, Gokyo, the upper Khumbu and Chhukung, moving beyond the busiest corridor into valleys shaped by Sherpa settlement, trade, Buddhism and high-mountain livelihoods. Box 2: Three Passes, Glaciers and Responsible Challenge Three major pass crossings, glacial terrain and two celebrated viewpoints create the region’s most varied trekking circuit, approached with careful acclimatization, trained local support and decisions guided by current mountain conditions.
Trail accommodation is in locally operated teahouses, normally on a twin-share basis. Facilities become simpler with altitude, and heating is generally limited to the shared dining room. Kathmandu accommodation follows the confirmed package.
Lukla flights may operate from Kathmandu or Manthali according to season and airport arrangements. All mountain flights are weather-dependent, so keep a contingency day. Road transfers and domestic flights included in the package will be specified in the confirmation.
A very strenuous and technical trekking itinerary crossing Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La, all above 5,300 m. Excellent endurance, prior high-altitude experience and confidence on steep, rough and potentially icy terrain are strongly recommended. Multiple acclimatization and recovery stages are essential. Pass crossings proceed only when the group is sufficiently acclimatized and trail, snow and weather conditions are acceptable.
Spring and autumn are generally the most reliable seasons, but snow, wind, cloud and freezing temperatures remain possible. Conditions can change quickly around glaciers and passes, and operational decisions must follow current trail and weather information.
A licensed guide manages navigation, lodge arrangements, acclimatization monitoring and emergencies. Porter service and baggage allowance depend on the booked package. Carry water, layers, valuables and personal medicine in your daypack.
The route normally requires the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit. Any additional route-specific requirement under current regulations will be confirmed before departure.
Insurance is mandatory and must cover the itinerary’s maximum altitude, trekking activities, medical treatment, trip interruption and helicopter evacuation in Nepal. Policy and emergency-contact details are required before departure. The guide will coordinate rest, descent, ground transfer or helicopter evacuation according to the medical and operational situation. Helicopter rescue depends on weather, landing conditions, authorisation and insurer or payment guarantees.
Respect Sherpa culture, monasteries and photography requests. Stay on established trails, conserve water and fuel, minimise plastic, carry waste out and support local lodges and services.
Confirmation requires the stated deposit, passport details and completed traveller information. Balance deadlines, currency, payment methods and transaction charges are governed by the official invoice and booking confirmation. Cancellation charges reflect the notice period and non-refundable permits, flights, hotels or supplier commitments. Weather, health, trail conditions or government instructions may require changes; safety and operational feasibility take priority.
